The Lebanese army deployed to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh and began taking security responsibility in the first “pilot zone” villages under the US-mediated Israel–Lebanon framework, as Israel said a pilot safe-zone phase had started in coordination with Lebanese forces.

Al Jazeera and AFP reported the 20–21 July 2026 deployment to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh as the first of three pilot-zone villages (also named Froun and Srifa/Ghandouriyeh in open reporting). The step implements part of the June 2026 Washington trilateral framework under which the Lebanese army is to assume security as Israel adjusts its posture in the south. Hezbollah has rejected the framework’s disarmament path; that political rejection is not the kinetic subject of this package. Residents later disputed whether some pilot villages had ever been under Israeli occupation.

Verification: Confirmed

Evidence: Lebanon's military starts 'pilot zone' takeover in south, Lebanese army enters pilot zone, as villagers return amid Israel deal

Deployment multi-sourced via Al Jazeera/AFP and concurrent US/Lebanese/Israeli framing of pilot-zone start; Hezbollah rejection of the broader deal is context, not a casualty claim here.
