The Houthis fired what their spokesman called “a broad operation” of ballistic missiles and drones into south-western Saudi Arabia early on 8 September. The Saudi-led coalition said civilian and economic sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran were struck and that 73 civilians were wounded, including women and children. Fires broke out at several energy sites and some operations were suspended; Brent rose towards $100 a barrel. It is the heaviest Houthi attack on the kingdom since the fighting resumed in July.

Coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki al-Malki said the attacks hit civilian and economic sites in four cities and wounded 73 people. The Houthis said they had struck Aramco facilities in Abha, Jazan, Najran and the Economic City, plus King Khalid air base in Khamis Mushait, with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones; Al Jazeera reported fires at oil installations across the southern provinces, including at the 400,000-barrel-a-day Jizan refinery, and the energy ministry described injuries of varying severity and a temporary suspension of some operational activities. The National reported a first ballistic missile and drone launched from Saada on Monday, with the bulk of the attacks on Tuesday morning. Aramco did not comment on damage to named sites, and no independent battle-damage assessment has been published. Saudi foreign minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said the kingdom would not hesitate to defend itself and its interests while the road to diplomacy was not closed. The Houthis said the operation answered the Saudi air campaign of the preceding days.

Why it matters

Ten months of this war have been fought over shipping. Putting dozens of missiles into four Saudi cities and setting refineries alight moves the cost from the sea lane to the kingdom’s own energy plant, which is what pushes Brent towards $100 and what Riyadh has to answer.

The attacks and the 73 wounded are on the record from the Saudi-led coalition and the energy ministry. The target list — Aramco sites in four places and King Khalid air base — is the Houthi claim; Aramco has not confirmed damage to named facilities and no independent battle-damage assessment exists.
