Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said on 16 October 2026 that Russian forces had captured the town of Dobropillia in Donetsk Oblast, Reuters reported; Russian General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov also listed Dobropillia among settlements he said had been taken since 1 September. Ukraine's General Staff spokesman Andriy Kovaliov said on 17 October that the claim was untrue and the town remained under Ukrainian control. On 20 October Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President's Office, said Dobropillia remained under Ukrainian control and accused Colonel General Andrei Ivanayev, commander of Russia's Centre Group of Forces, of misleading the Russian president after reporting that the town had been taken. This records a claimed capture, not current control; no independent confirmation was read.
