Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia attacked from 18:00 on 8 September with Iskander-M ballistic missiles from occupied Crimea, an S8000 Banderol from the Sea of Azov and 196 attack drones — Shahed types including jet-powered ones, Gerberas and Parodiya decoys — launched from Crimea, the Azov and the Oryol and Kursk directions. Air defences downed or suppressed 165 drones. Strikes were recorded at 23 locations, with debris at four more; Kyiv and the Odesa region were the main targets.

The Air Force published its tally at about 08:30 on 9 September and credited aircraft, surface-to-air units, electronic warfare and unmanned interceptors. UA.NEWS carried the same launch figures but put the hits at 29 locations, so the count of impact sites is not settled. This record is the national air picture of the night; individual impacts already have their own records, including the Starokozache border crossing on the Moldovan frontier and the fires in Dnipro. Casualty figures for Kyiv are not asserted here: outlets differ over whether the five deaths and 35 injuries reported in the capital belong to this night or to the barrage of the previous one, which is recorded separately.

Why it matters

It is the first full night after the capital pause collapsed, and its size — nearly two hundred drones plus ballistic missiles in one wave — is the answer to whether the September mediation changed the air war.

  • Infrastructure: Low 23 · High 29 locations_with_recorded_impacts · Confidence: Estimated · Evidence: Air defenses down 165 drones in overnight Russian attack on Ukraine, Air defense forces shot down 165 of 196 drones during the Russian attack · Ukrinform reports 23 impact sites and four debris sites; UA.NEWS reports 29.

Verification: Probable

Evidence: Air defenses down 165 drones in overnight Russian attack on Ukraine, Air defense forces shot down 165 of 196 drones during the Russian attack

Launch and interception figures are the Ukrainian Air Force’s own and are not independently verifiable. Two outlets carrying the same statement differ on the number of impact sites (23 against 29). No casualty claim is made in this record.
