On the evening of 15 September 2026 (~18:50 Saudi local / ~15:50Z), Saudi-led coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said Royal Saudi Air Defense intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the holy city's prohibited airspace; wreckage fell south of the city. Al Jazeera and Anadolu (16 Sep) corroborate the coalition account alongside earlier Ajel English and FaytuksNetwork relays. Al-Maliki called the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims a “red line” and said it was the second such attempt after a July 2017 ballistic missile. Saudi authorities briefly activated a security alert in Mecca (also Taif and Jeddah), then lifted it after a few minutes — the first Mecca alert since 2017 per Al Jazeera. A Houthi military source via SABA, carried by Al Jazeera, categorically denied any threat to Mecca or other Islamic holy sites and called the claim misinformation. No casualties reported. Distinct from LIVE evt_ef730824 (14 Sep Khamis Mushait/Abha/Taif injuries) and evt_b4d766a3 (Saudi response vow).

Why it matters

Coalition-claimed Houthi drone intercept on Mecca approaches now has AJ/AA second-wire corroboration, a brief multi-city alert, and an explicit Houthi denial — still no native video.

Verification: Probable

Evidence: Coalition: RSAF AD intercepts Houthi drone south of Mecca, Saudi AD intercepts Houthi drone south of Mecca — photo, Al Jazeera: Saudi-led coalition intercepts Houthi drone headed for Mecca; brief alert, Anadolu: Saudi air defenses intercept Houthi drone near Mecca

PROBABLE: Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki via Ajel, Faytuks, Al Jazeera, and Anadolu — RSAF AD intercepted/destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca ~18:50 local 15 Sep before prohibited airspace; brief Mecca/Taif/Jeddah alert then lifted; Houthi source via SABA denies any Mecca/holy-site threat. No casualties. Faytuks post is photo-only (no native video).
