Competing accounts of a Monday evening 14 September 2026 drone strike in Persian Gulf waters near Larak Island / Kargan (Hormozgan). Iranian side: Hormozgan deputy governor Ahmad Nafisi told Mehr that two fishing boats were targeted ~12 miles from Larak and ~30 miles from Kargan, with several fishermen missing and SAR underway; IRNA English, Iran International, Xinhua/Tasnim carried the provincial claim (Tasnim attributed a U.S. drone). U.S. side (15–16 Sep): Axios, citing U.S. officials, reported that IRGC small boats tried to seize a U.S. Navy unmanned surface vessel in the Strait of Hormuz; an American drone fired two missiles, destroying both boats and killing most aboard. CENTCOM spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins confirmed the attempted seizure failed after CENTCOM “forcefully responded” and said the surface drone remains under U.S. operational control (relayed via Faytuks). India Today (16 Sep), citing Hawkins, named the USV a ~25-foot (8 m) Saildrone used by CENTCOM to monitor maritime traffic, said all U.S. surface drones remained accounted for, and described the Saildrone tech as commercial/non-sensitive. Axios notes Iranian media presented the strike as an attack on fishing boats. Distinct from UKMTO Warning 135-26, MT El Gaia (134-26), and the older IRGC-struck-Saildrone claim evt_e71ea74e (10 Sep). Do not adjudicate identities of those aboard.

Why it matters

Same Larak/Kargan boat strike keeps the CENTCOM vs Iranian provincial attribution conflict; U.S. side now names the contested USV as a ~25-foot Saildrone.

ATTRIBUTION CLAIM CONFLICT. Iranian provincial/state media: two fishing boats struck near Larak/Kargan, fishermen missing (Nafisi/Mehr/IRNA/Iran Intl/Tasnim). U.S.: Axios + CENTCOM Capt. Tim Hawkins — IRGC small boats attempted to seize a U.S. USV; U.S. drone destroyed both boats, killing most aboard; USV remains under U.S. control. India Today (16 Sep) names the USV a ~25-foot Saildrone (commercial/non-sensitive; all U.S. surface drones accounted for). Axios says Iranian media framed it as fishing boats. Keep both narratives as claims; do not adjudicate who was aboard. Distinct from UKMTO 135-26, El Gaia, and evt_e71ea74e.
