Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said early on 17 October 2026 that a supertanker carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil, which it said had disabled its positioning and radar systems and was attempting to use an unauthorized passage through the Strait of Hormuz, hit a naval mine, triggering an explosion and a major fire, IRNA reported. IRNA later posted footage of a burning tanker attributed to the IRGC Navy. The statement did not name the vessel, its flag or owner, its exact position, or the crew's condition, Anadolu and Euronews reported; Reuters, via The Times of Israel, said the account could not be independently verified. The IRGC added that the strait is closed to vessels defying Iranian regulations. On 16 October Iran's Army Navy separately reported a tanker on fire in a restricted area of the Sea of Oman (evt_5142954a); it is not established whether the two reports refer to the same ship.
