Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement on 20 October 2026 that mines planted by its naval forces on the 'illegal' southern route of the Strait of Hormuz had exploded, setting two 'violating' tankers on fire and stopping them, Mehr News Agency reported; the same statement claimed the overnight downing of a US MQ-9 drone (recorded separately as evt_e4e1741b). The IRGC Navy warned that crossing the mined route would only result in violators' assets being set on fire. Al Mayadeen English and Iran International also reported the IRGC claim. The tankers, their flags, positions and crews were not identified, and no UKMTO, shipping-company or independent confirmation was read; the claim is unverified. Later that day a CENTCOM spokesman, quoted by Kurdistan24, said Iranian claims that tankers were hitting naval mines in the strait were false, that the international waterways had been cleared of mines and that Iran was using missiles and drones. This is a separate claim from the tanker the IRGC said hit a mine on 18 October (evt_cc9f6a8c) and the two supertankers of 17 October (evt_2011cc0e, evt_19e50a9a).
