On 6 September 2026 evening Iranian state television, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Iran will implement in the coming days a new restricted maritime zone outside the Strait of Hormuz, described as running from the U.S. naval blockade line toward Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman approaches / loading-port stretches. He said vessels entering the designated area without coordination with Iran would be placed on an Iranian sanctions list, with consequences for insurance and future navigation/transit. Rezaei reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely closed,” and said an Iran–Oman corridor arrangement in the strait had been agreed with further details pending. The zone is an Iranian official claim and was not yet implemented at report time; no official polygon was published.

Why it matters

A claimed Iranian restricted zone beyond Hormuz, tied to sanctions on uncoordinated shipping and framed against the U.S. blockade line, is a separate maritime-control discontinuity from standing U.S. blockade tallies and from Iran’s existing Hormuz-closure claim.

UNVERIFIED Iranian official claim via state-aligned coverage (Press TV, Mehr, WANA) plus Middle East Eye live-blog update and HormuzLetter X pista. Rezaei said the restricted zone would be implemented in the coming days — not yet in force at report time; no official coordinates/polygon published. Distinct from standing U.S. blockade events (do not revise) and from Iran’s prior Hormuz-closure standing claim.
