On the evening of 8 September 2026 Iran launched a ballistic-missile wave toward Jordan after U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers. The Jordanian Armed Forces said early on 9 September that 20 ballistic missiles were fired from Iran toward Jordanian territory; air defences intercepted and destroyed 18, and the other two landed in unpopulated areas with no casualties reported (BBC; Ajel). Iranian state media and monitors had earlier named Muwaffaq Salti (Azraq) and Prince Hassan as targets and claimed hangar damage; CENTCOM had not confirmed impacts or base damage at packaging. Distinct from the CENTCOM five-tanker strikes (evt_80de1d7f).

BBC reported that Tehran launched missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan and that Jordan said it shot down 18 of 20 Iranian missiles, with two falling in unpopulated areas per a Jordanian Armed Forces spokesperson. Ajel English carried the same 18-of-20 intercept and no-casualties line. Earlier same-evening open-source and Iranian-state posts (Press TV, Clash Report, Hormuz Letter, Drop Site, Mario Nawfal, Fars via World Source News, i24NEWS correspondent Amichai Stein) described a multi-city launch and sirens/intercepts over Azraq/Salti; those clips remain unverified as to impact. Do not treat IRGC hangar-destruction claims as confirmed.

Why it matters

A Jordanian Armed Forces intercept tally (18 of 20, two in open ground, no casualties) is the first official host-nation confirmation of the Iranian salvo against U.S.-linked bases in Jordan after the five-tanker CENTCOM strikes — shifting the event from monitor/state-media claims alone to a probable, bounded air-defence outcome.

Verification: Probable

Evidence: Video shows Iranian missiles in the skies over Jordan, Iranian missiles are targeting U.S. bases in Jordan, Iran firing missiles with cluster ammunition at targets in Jordan, Iran launching ballistic missiles from Yazd, Khomein, Zanjan, Qom, Isfahan, Khorramabad and Tabriz; explosions at Salti and Prince Hassan, Iran launches what IRGC-linked outlets describe as its largest missile barrage since the 40-day war; no impacts independently confirmed, Fars: attack on Muqaddasi and Prince Hassan bases in Jordan, Interceptors climbing out of Muwaffaq Salti as Iranian missiles arrive, US forces hit five Iranian tankers as Tehran targets American base in Jordan, Jordan intercepts 18 Iranian ballistic missiles, two land in empty areas

PROBABLE for the salvo and Jordanian intercept outcome via Jordanian Armed Forces statement carried by BBC and Ajel (20 ballistic missiles from Iran; 18 intercepted; 2 landed in unpopulated areas; no casualties). Targeting of Muwaffaq Salti / Prince Hassan and IRGC hangar-damage claims remain Iranian/monitor assertions without CENTCOM confirmation. Keep prior X embeds as unverified situational video.
