On Sunday, 4 October 2026, Yemen's president and head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, said in a televised address: "Today, I announce the start of military operations to retake the remaining territory of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory." He instructed the armed forces, security forces and military formations to carry out their assigned tasks under an approved plan, and said all state institutions would be placed on full alert until the mission is completed. The announcement is his statement; it does not by itself record ground taken. HormuzLetter reported the same announcement with the detail that more than 100,000 Yemeni troops are to be mobilised under Saudi command and supported by Saudi air strikes to retake Bab el-Mandeb until the country is liberated from the Houthis, pursuant to decisions of the National Defence Council, and that the offensive comes weeks earlier than expected; no source other than that account was read for those figures.

Why it matters

It sets the government's declared objective for the ground campaign on the Taiz front at the same time the Houthis were cutting the Taiz-Aden supply road.
