Hours after the barrage that ended the three-day halt on strikes against the capitals, Volodymyr Zelensky said that of the peace package Jared Kushner had described there were “indeed a couple of very good, worthwhile ideas”, and thanked US officials for trying to unblock negotiations with Moscow. He said he planned to meet Donald Trump around 20 September at the UN General Assembly and would press for more Patriot systems. Foreign minister Andrii Sybiha called the night “a horrific attack” and said Putin’s “ballistic missiles speak louder than his words on diplomacy”.

It is the first Ukrainian assessment of the substance of what the American envoys brought, and it came on the day Russia resumed strikes on Kyiv. Zelensky did not say which ideas, and no text of the package has been published by any party. Sybiha added that “strike after strike on residential buildings brings him no closer to winning this war — it is nothing but senseless terror”. Neither capital has announced a further round of talks.

Why it matters

Kyiv had taken the winter aid package from the envoys’ visit and nothing else. Saying two of the ideas are worth having, on the morning after the pause collapsed, is Ukraine keeping the American channel open while the missiles fall.
