The Navy of Iran's regular army said on 20 October 2026 that its surveillance teams monitoring the eastern Strait of Hormuz had detected, before noon, an oil tanker on fire in a prohibited area of the southern corridor; it said the tanker had switched off its tracking systems despite prior warnings and was trying to transit the restricted zone, and that violators bear responsibility for the consequences. The Navy did not say what caused the fire, and the tanker, its flag and crew were not identified. Kurdistan24 reported that a CENTCOM spokesman rejected Iranian claims that tankers were hitting mines, saying the waterway had been cleared of mines and that Iran was using missiles and drones. It is not established whether this tanker is one of the two the IRGC said were set ablaze by its mines the same day (evt_258524df). Later on 20 October the IRGC Navy said, in a statement carried by state TV and reported by IRNA, that a supertanker carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil, which it said had deactivated all its radar and navigation systems, exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine south of the Strait of Hormuz; AFP, via Arab News, described it as a third tanker after the two the IRGC said had been set ablaze earlier. The IRGC did not name the vessel or give its position, and it is not established whether the supertanker is the tanker reported by the Army Navy; both accounts describe a tanker on the southern route with its systems switched off on the same day. No UKMTO notice on either was read, and the IRGC claim is unverified.
