Drone attacks overnight into 2 October set fires at the Volgograd Oil Refinery and the nearby Kaustik chemical plant, and at the Samara Linear Production and Dispatch Station, a Transneft oil storage facility that Astra described as Europe's largest tank farm. Russia's Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted or destroyed 646 Ukrainian drones across 14 regions, Crimea and the Black and Azov seas between 20:00 Moscow time on 1 October and 08:00 on 2 October. Russia's deputy prime minister said four oil plants were attacked overnight and that damage was limited, while Volgograd's governor reported a fire in an apartment building in the Krasnoarmeysky District that hospitalized one person. Samara authorities have not commented on the reported fire at the storage facility. Separately, a DefenceU account citing Ukraine's Defence Ministry describes a longer week of strikes, in which a Volgograd refinery, an unnamed petrochemical plant in Samara region and a Samara station were hit at distances of 480 to 1,000 kilometres behind the front line; that account does not place those three strikes in the night of 1 to 2 October and does not name the Samara plant.

Probable: two independent outlets plus the Russian Defence Ministry reporting for the same overnight attack, joined by Ukraine's Defence Ministry account of the strikes. Ukrainian and Russian accounts are each side's own claim and do not independently verify each other; the Samara tank-farm fire rests on a local monitoring channel. The DefenceU post describes a separate week-long series and does not confirm the timing of this overnight wave.
