President Trump said no talks with Iran were underway or scheduled and that the Strait of Hormuz was open and mined water had been cleared, while top Iranian negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said the strait would remain shut until the United States ended its port blockade, oil sanctions, asset freezes and military threats.

Reuters reported Trump’s 18 August 2026 Truth Social post contradicting both Iranian officials and the previous day’s comments by Jared Kushner that contacts were “more robust” than ever. A companion Reuters report carried Qalibaf’s parliamentary remarks that reopening hinged on Washington meeting the June interim deal. Kpler data cited in the same coverage still showed single-digit daily crossings. This package is the diplomatic contradiction, not a hydrographic survey of the strait.
