Iran’s army said on 8 September that its air defences detected, tracked and destroyed a US MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, in southeastern Iran, using a new system inside the country’s integrated air-defence network. The United States has not confirmed a loss. The MQ-1 Predator was retired from US Air Force service in 2018.

Al-Manar, carrying Press TV, quoted an army statement rather than an IRGC one. Tasnim, relayed by BBC Persian, placed the claim over southern Hormozgan near the strait. Some aggregators attributed the same claim to the IRGC; the army statement is the one used here. No wreckage location, tail number or CENTCOM acknowledgement was published. A May 2026 MQ-1 loss that CENTCOM did confirm is not this record.

Why it matters

Iran is advertising that US surveillance over Hormuz can be killed. An MQ-1 is an older airframe, and without a US loss report the claim is still only Tehran talking.

Evidence: Iran Shoots Down US MQ-1 Drone over Strait of Hormuz, Iran announces the downing of an American MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian army / Press TV / Tasnim party claim. No CENTCOM or independent Western confirmation of a loss. Do not treat a shoot-down as a fact. The US Air Force retired the MQ-1 in 2018; if a Predator-class airframe was over Hormuz it was not that service’s current fleet.
