Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had ordered that no strikes be carried out against Kyiv for three days, a 72-hour halt from midnight on 6 September. Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to observe a matching pause on strikes against capitals through Monday. Nothing else stopped: strikes continued across other Ukrainian regions and inside Russia throughout. The pause ended when missiles and drones hit Kyiv in the early hours of 8 September.

The halt was declared around the visit of the US envoys to Moscow and Kyiv and covered the two capitals only. Moscow rejected calls for a wider pause in hostilities. During the three days Ukrainian drones struck the Ryazan refinery and air defences in Rostov Oblast, and Russian strikes killed civilians in Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions — none of it inside the terms. The window each side stated was not the same: the Kremlin announced 72 hours from midnight on the 6th, which would have run to midnight on the 9th, while Zelensky’s commitment was through Monday the 7th. Kyiv was struck from about 03:30 on Tuesday the 8th, and this record closes the condition there, at the last hour a source sustains it.

Why it matters

It is the only thing the September mediation produced, and its shape says what the mediation is worth: three days, two cities, and everything else — the front, the refineries, the energy grid — expressly outside it.

Both declarations are on the record — Peskov to state media, Zelensky on X — and the two windows they describe are not identical. Neither side published a monitoring mechanism, and the end of the pause is dated here from the strike on Kyiv, not from an announcement.
