On the evening of 15 September 2026, the IDF and Shin Bet conducted a targeted strike in the Mawasi area of western Khan Younis that Israeli officials say hit Hamas Rafah Brigade commander Na'el (Nayal/Naiel) Abu Abid, also known as Abu Atiya. Gaza sources report two adjacent tents near the gate of the al-Sumud displaced-persons camp were hit — first by a suicide drone, then by aircraft-fired missiles — with 2 Palestinians killed and 14 wounded. WAFA named eight-year-old Amal Yasser Omar among the two killed and said more than 10 were injured. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz publicly confirmed the strike, stating the IDF was striking the Rafah Brigade commander after recent killings of the Khan Younis Brigade commander and other senior figures. Jerusalem Post identifies the target as Nayal Abu Obeid, who replaced Mohammad Shabanah (killed May 2025); Ynet reports the defense establishment is increasingly confident he was eliminated. Distinct from LIVE evt_cd377422 (Abu Hadaf), evt_2bd86f33 (Muhammad Yazouri, Khan Younis Brigade) and evt_fa4c9ac1 (Jabalia Battalion / Ahmad al-Batash).
