The Revolutionary Guard said its Aerospace Force struck two US Navy destroyers with ballistic missiles — naming them as USS Delbert D. Black (DDG-119) and USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) — and caused significant damage, and its naval force said it had attacked two American vessels and eight oil tankers, “10 offending vessels”, in the Gulf. CENTCOM said the targeted warship successfully evaded the attempts and that no American personnel were harmed. No damaged hull has been shown by either side.

The Guard presented both operations as the answer to the five IRGC-linked tankers US forces destroyed on Tuesday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran keeps trying to hit US naval ships and that “for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers”. Iran’s foreign ministry called the American strikes a war crime and a violation of the UN Charter. Brent traded at $99.49 in early Wednesday dealing. No owner, flag state or UKMTO advisory has reported damage to any of the eight tankers, and the US Navy has not published imagery of either destroyer.

Why it matters

Naming two hulls is a claim that can be checked: those ships will be photographed in port. It also moves the exchange from tankers, which both sides now trade, to warships, where a single confirmed hit changes what Washington has to answer.

Verification: Disputed

Evidence: US strikes 5 Iranian oil tankers; Tehran targets Jordan base, US warships, Iran’s IRGC says it attacked 2 U.S. vessels, 8 oil tankers in retaliation for U.S. strike, Iran says it hit American vessels, oil tankers in Hormuz in retaliation for U.S. strikes

Two incompatible accounts of the same event: the Guard claims significant damage to two named destroyers and eight tankers, CENTCOM says the warship evaded and nobody was harmed. Neither side has published imagery, and no tanker operator has reported damage.
