On 8 September 2026 U.S. Central Command said U.S. forces destroyed five IRGC-linked crude oil tankers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the preceding two days. CENTCOM named M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman and M/T Derya near Kharg Island. American forces directed crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable; Air Force and Navy fighters and drones conducted the strikes. The unnamed U.S. warship successfully evaded the Iranian attempts; no American personnel were harmed. Air & Space Forces Magazine and NBC News carried the CENTCOM account. Distinct from the 5 September Downy/Stark 1/Kylo strand (evt_de3ab318) and from the unconfirmed small Kharg tanker claim (evt_13cc1b73). Iranian ballistic retaliation toward U.S. bases in Jordan is covered separately (evt_412ffc1b) and is not duplicated here. CENTCOM also released official X video of the multi-hull strikes and a follow-up clip of M/T Riesco sinking in the Gulf of Oman.

Why it matters

A named five-hull CENTCOM strike on IRGC crude carriers across the Gulf of Oman and Kharg, framed as retaliation for renewed ballistic attempts on a U.S. Navy warship, marks a major escalation of the U.S.–Iran tanker-interdiction campaign beyond the 5 September three-ship action.

Verification: Probable

Evidence: US Strikes 5 Iranian Oil Tankers as More Fighter Jets Ordered to Middle East, U.S. strikes five Iranian tankers after attempted attacks on Navy warship, CENTCOM says, CENTCOM: forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 8, CENTCOM: M/T Riesco sinks in the Gulf of Oman after Sept. 8 strike

PROBABLE via CENTCOM statement carried by Air & Space Forces Magazine and NBC News: five named IRGC crude carriers destroyed (Kaviz, Charminar, Horizon 1, Riesco in Gulf of Oman; Derya near Kharg); crews ordered to abandon; vessels rendered inoperable/destroyed by USAF/USN fighters and drones; U.S. warship evaded two days of IRGC ballistic attempts; 0 U.S. casualties. Hull numbers of the U.S. warship unpublished. Do not merge with evt_de3ab318 (Sep5 Downy/Stark/Kylo) or revise evt_13cc1b73 (unconfirmed small Kharg tanker). Jordan ballistic wave claims after these strikes are already covered by evt_412ffc1b — not duplicated here. Native CENTCOM X video (permalink + video.twimg.com 1920x1080 MP4) added on 5h review for the five-hull package and Riesco sink follow-up.
