US Central Command said that after Iran launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships on 5 September, American forces permanently disabled the IRGC crude carriers M/T Downy off Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and destroyed the unladen M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman after ordering its crew off. CENTCOM said the next day that Kylo had sunk. Iranian media had first reported explosions at Kharg’s anchorage; Tasnim said there were no casualties.

CENTCOM named the three hulls as part of a shadow network funding the IRGC and its proxies. Admiral Brad Cooper said that if Iran shot at two US ships, Washington would take out three of theirs. Audio confirmed by CNN recorded a US military aircraft warning Stark 1 to abandon ship before firing. Tasnim reported four projectiles hitting a tanker at Kharg’s anchorage and a crew evacuation with no casualties. The IRGC later claimed it had targeted US-linked vessels in response; CENTCOM did not confirm those hits. This package is the US three-ship strike as announced. Why it matters

Kharg is where most of Iran’s crude leaves the country. Hitting laden tankers there, and saying the rest of the shadow fleet is fair game, is Washington answering a missed shot at the Navy with an economic one.
