An account posting conflict maps reported at 01:13 UTC on 7 October 2026 that the Malian military, alongside Russia's Africa Corps, had captured Kidal in northeastern Mali after FLA and JNIM rebels withdrew. Jeune Afrique wrote on 9 October that the retaking of Kidal is a major victory for Assimi Goïta and the junta, and that the city had been held by the FLA since 25 April 2026. Sputnik Afrique relayed an Africa Corps publication saying intensive reconnaissance during assault preparations located enemy rear bases and material and fuel depots, which were destroyed with drones and reduced the fighters' mobility before the takeover. No source gives a date for the takeover itself or for those preparatory actions.

An unconfirmed claim from an account posting conflict maps.

Evidence: CKMapss reports a capture of Kidal in northeastern Mali, Sputnik Afrique relays Africa Corps on preparatory reconnaissance and drone strikes before Kidal takeover

A conflict-map account first reported the takeover, Jeune Afrique described it as a major victory and dated the FLA's previous control from 25 April 2026, and Sputnik Afrique relayed an Africa Corps publication about preparatory reconnaissance and drone destruction of rear bases and depots. No Malian army statement, no independent confirmation, no date for the takeover or for the preparatory actions, and no primary Africa Corps text beyond the Sputnik relay were read.
