The World Health Organization put the toll of Yemen’s renewed fighting at at least 728 people killed or wounded since 23 August. The IOM said about 21,000 people — some 3,000 families — had been displaced from Taiz alone since Thursday, many of them for a second or third time. The president of the ICRC called for urgent steps to de-escalate, saying the fighting risked widening the region’s war.

Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera carried the WHO figure on Tuesday, alongside the IOM displacement count given by its mission head Abdusattor Esoev. The 728 covers killed and wounded together and is not broken down between combatants and civilians, nor between the two sides; CBS, reporting the ICRC appeal the same day, described more than 500 dead, mostly combatants from both sides. None of these tallies is a battlefield count: they are what health facilities and aid agencies could register while the fronts around Taiz, Hodeidah and Al-Jawf were moving.

Why it matters

The Red Sea war is usually measured in ships and refineries. This is the count of what it costs on the ground in the seventeen days since the offensive began — and the displacement figure is from one governorate alone.

Agency figures, not an independent census: the WHO count aggregates killed and wounded without a civilian breakdown, and the displacement figure is the IOM’s for Taiz governorate alone.
