UN Under-Secretary-General Jorge Moreira da Silva urged Iran and the United States on 14 October to agree within weeks on a UN-backed mechanism for fertiliser shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reported, citing his remarks to Reuters. He said the mechanism could be activated in seven to ten days after agreement, with a UN-staffed coordination centre in Oman registering and monitoring vessels. He warned that missing planting seasons could reduce agricultural output and increase prices. The plan has not been agreed or activated.
