On 15 September 2026 Saudi Arabia warned it would respond firmly to the Houthis after ballistic missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif wounded 13 civilians and damaged seven houses and two vehicles. The Saudi foreign ministry affirmed the kingdom's legitimate right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and its civilians, and coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki Al-Malki had already said the coalition would act under Article 51 self-defence. No target set, timing or form of the announced response has been published.

Why it matters

A stated intention to retaliate, without a named target set, is the point at which the Saudi–Houthi exchange either stays inside the existing air campaign or becomes something with a new threshold.
