Government forces besieged and then said they had captured the al-Lubnat (al-Labanat) camp east of Al-Hazm in al-Jawf on Monday 7 September, with dozens of Houthi fighters surrendering according to Yemeni state television. On the Red Sea coast an official said the advance had pushed 30 km inland before stalling in Taiz. IOM counted more than 20,000 people displaced.

Field reporting through the day described a siege of the Houthi-held al-Libnat camp east of Al-Hazm city before the capture was announced. i24NEWS reported that, following alleged Saudi air strikes, government forces captured the al-Libnat military camp in the desert and that dozens of Houthis then surrendered, citing Yemeni state television, and that Saudi media reported northern tribes mobilising in support. On the coast the government-aligned governor of Hodeidah told Saudi state media he was confident government forces would take Hodeidah, and one official said they had pushed 30 km inland, though the momentum stalled against heavy fighting around Taiz. The UN's International Organization for Migration put displacement from the renewed fighting at more than 20,000 people, and the same report gave a running toll of more than 300 killed. Neither the capture nor the surrenders have independent confirmation, and the Houthis did not comment.

Why it matters

Al-Hazm is the objective of the al-Jawf offensive and al-Lubnat is the camp that covers its eastern approach. Taking it is the first concrete ground gain of the government's northern push, and it is the same fight that produced the strike on Al-Hazm's prison the same day.

  • Displaced people: Low 20000 people · Confidence: Probable · Evidence: Yemen war escalates as Saudi-aligned forces and Houthis clash in deadly offensive · IOM: more than 20,000 people displaced by the renewed fighting.

Single source, and the picture moved during the day: field reporting had government forces besieging the camp before the capture was announced. The capture and the surrenders rest on Yemeni state television, the 30 km coastal advance on an unnamed official, and the Houthis have not commented. The IOM displacement figure is the one number here with an independent institution behind it.
