German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived unannounced in Kyiv on 4 October 2026, travelling by special train with Economy Minister Katharina Reiche and ten German defence and energy executives. Merz pledged long-range weapons and 1,000 specialised drone interceptors to counter Russian jet-powered Shahed drones, and warned that failing to halt Russian forces would eventually endanger NATO itself. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the chancellor would hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky on bilateral relations, European affairs and international issues. The visit comes amid an intensifying Russian missile and drone campaign against Ukraine and ahead of the winter heating season. President Zelenskyy said at the same press conference that Ukraine and Germany are already jointly producing drones, that Ukraine will purchase more weapons and equipment from Germany, that joint work on creating UAV units in Germany has already begun with Ukraine ready to help with training and experience, and that both are ready to expand the use of Ukrainian energy protection technologies.

Why it matters

Zelenskyy described joint drone production with Germany, further Ukrainian purchases of German weapons and equipment, joint work on UAV units in Germany, and expanding use of Ukrainian energy protection technologies.
