President Trump said the United States has “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz and would keep it, even as Kpler data showed daily transits in single digits; Iran’s newly appointed Basij chief said the waterway was under Iranian control and management and would not reopen until Washington met Tehran’s conditions.

Al Jazeera reported Trump’s 12 August 2026 Truth Social post claiming US control of Hormuz and describing the Iran-port blockade as a “wall of steel.” Reuters the next day carried Hossein Taeb saying the strait is “under Iran’s control and management.” Ship-tracking cited in the same coverage showed eight transits on 11 August versus a pre-war 130–140 a day. This package records the competing control claims, not a change in the underlying closure or blockade conditions tracked separately.

Evidence: As Strait of Hormuz transit drops, Trump again says US has control, Iran, US make competing claims over control of Strait of Hormuz, Trump on Iran: I like the idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory

Confirmed multi-outlet coverage of both public claims; neither side’s “control” assertion is treated as an independent hydrographic fact.
