NATO jets shoot down a drone over Lithuania, the first such downing in the country's airspace

ATTACK

Importance
Major

Italian fighter jets flying NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission shot down a drone early on 15 September 2026 near the village of Pratkunai, Kaisiadorys district, about 90 km north-west of Vilnius. Lithuania's military said it was the first time a drone had been shot down in the country's airspace. The aircraft most likely entered from Belarus, stayed in Lithuanian airspace for roughly 30 minutes and flew along the outskirts of populated areas before being intercepted. Lithuanian air force commander Antanas Matutis said the wreckage had been found and that the drone likely carried explosives. No attribution of ownership has been published, and there has been no Russian or Belarusian comment. The downing came less than a day after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said strikes close to alliance territory would push NATO to increase its support for Kyiv.

Why it matters

An alliance member firing on a drone over its own territory for the first time moves the war's spillover from airspace violations that are protested to engagements that are fought, which is a different threshold for everyone involved.
