South Korea's Foreign Ministry announced on 20 October 2026 that it would reduce its diplomatic staff at the embassy in Ukraine, Yonhap reported, as relayed by Ukrinform and Al Jazeera. Ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon said the decision came because Ukraine had yet to take 'positive steps' to resolve the dispute over Kyiv's unilateral disclosure of the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul, while continued airstrike threats made it difficult to ensure the safety of diplomats; he said Seoul would keep necessary diplomatic contacts with Kyiv and retain all consular staff. South Korea's ambassador had returned to Seoul on 10 October.
