Russian forces carried out several missile strikes on Zaporizhzhia on the morning of 17 October 2026, damaging residential buildings, Ivan Fedorov, co-head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defence Council, said, initially reporting two people injured. Ukraine's State Emergency Service later said five people, including a child, were injured in the massive attack, that rescuers put out fires and helped residents leave blocked apartments, and that the number of casualties was being clarified. Metinvest said six ballistic missiles struck the internal energy and logistics infrastructure of its Zaporizhstal steelworks at dawn, further damaging blast-furnace production facilities, with no casualties at the plant because employees had reached shelters, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
