The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control designated 36 targets — every one of Iran’s 27 remaining active airlines plus eight companies and one individual — accused of supplying aircraft, parts and logistics to the sector Washington says Tehran uses to move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo. Three Iran-related aviation authorisations were suspended at the same time, including permission for overflights and for non-US carriers to fly US-origin aircraft into Iran.
The action was taken under Executive Orders 13224 and 13902 and is part of Operation Economic Outcast, the sanctions campaign Treasury opened on 24 August 2026. Alongside the airlines the designations name foreign intermediaries in aircraft procurement, cargo services and transshipment. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department had promised severe consequences for those providing financial lifelines to the Iranian regime and had followed through with sanctions on companies that continue to support Mahan Air. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi answered publicly the same day, writing that after failing through sanctions or war, Washington’s solution was more sanctions.
Why it matters
Iran’s civil fleet is how people and cargo still leave a country under naval blockade. Designating all 27 remaining carriers, and pulling the overflight authorisations with them, closes the air door in the same week the sea one was counted at ten ships a day.
